What is Coeliac Disease?

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where the body has an abnormal response to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. When individuals with coeliac disease consume gluten, their immune system mistakenly treats it as a threat, causing inflammation and damage to the small intestine. This can lead to various symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, fatigue, and poor growth in children.

The condition is managed by strictly following a gluten-free diet, which helps to prevent symptoms and allows the intestine to heal. Foods containing gluten, such as bread, pasta, and cereals, must be avoided. However, many naturally gluten-free foods, such as rice, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats, are safe and provide essential nutrients.

Dietitians can support families to plan balanced and nutritious gluten-free meals to support growth and health, ensuring children with coeliac disease can enjoy a varied and enjoyable diet.
