Reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), occurs when stomach contents flow back into the oesophagus, causing discomfort, irritability, and sometimes vomiting. In infants and children, reflux can lead to symptoms such as frequent spitting up, coughing, feeding difficulties, or poor weight gain. While mild reflux is common in infants and usually resolves with age, more severe cases may require intervention. Dietitians can help manage reflux by recommending appropriate feeding techniques, such as smaller, more frequent feedings or adjusting the consistency of breast milk or formula. They can also suggest changes in the baby’s diet, like avoiding acidic or irritating foods for older children, and offer positioning advice to minimise reflux episodes. By providing tailored guidance, dietitians help reduce symptoms and support the child’s growth and comfort.
